  • Specific Responsibilities

    The Manager of Transportation reports directly to the Senior Director of Transportation working closely with the Director(s) of Distribution, and Senior Managers of Operations Support.  This position will have significant responsibility leading and managing all inbound container moves, air shipments and pre-paid outbound movements for all GBG divisions, spanning multiple DC locations and 3PL partners across North America. This position will be responsible for the development and performance of 2 – 3 direct reports in the US and a team in Panyu, China.

    • Responsible for ensuring that GBG division expectations around cost and service levels are met for all overseas containers for both East and West coasts of North America.
    • Responsible for ensuring that GBG division expectations around cost, service levels, and carrier reliability are met for all pre-paid and small parcel shipments for both East and West coasts of North America.
    • Leverages monthly actual versus budget/forecast reporting to maintain/reduce transportation costs, identify continuous improvement opportunities and plans for improvement.
    • Ensures that equipment is assigned and moves are executed within defined SLA metrics for all modes of transportation.
    • Integrates continuous improvement initiatives based on industry knowledge, customer/division strategic business plan and quality management tools.
    • Responsible for defining system and/or reporting requirements necessary to provide continuous value to GBG and supporting vendors.
    • Maintains all regulator and compliance reporting.
    • Monitors the 3 – 6 month rolling forecasts by division to identify potential risk points to cost and/or service levels by division and for the GBG network.
    • Prepares and schedules quarterly business reviews with each transportation vendor and GBG Division to ensure an effective flow of information, validate forecast accuracy, improve performance quality for vendor/GBG business contacts, reduce costs and mitigate risk.
    • Responsible for tracking and following up on continuous improvement and/or corrective measures identified through day-to-day operations or quarterly business reviews.
    • Monitors carrier capacity and performance and makes recommendations as to the right balance of inbound drayage and outbound carriers to control costs and maintain established SLA metrics.
    • Attends and participates in GBG division leadership meetings regarding areas such as business plans, operating forecasts, competitive analysis, financial plans or level of service.
    • Responsible for the timely and accurate distribution of information to all transportation providers, 3PL’s and GBG leadership.
    • Provides project support and management where applicable for their given group of divisions.

    Skills and Requirements

    • 5 – 10 years of progressive port/drayage operations and outbound transportation experience in retail, wholesale, and direct to consumer work flows servicing Wal Mart, Macy’s, Kohl’s, Target, mid-tier specialty retailers, as well as drop ship and company owned web site small parcel shipping.
    • Experience working with terminal leadership, drayage vendors, SSL vendors and outbound transportations vendors.
    • Experience negotiating transportation service agreements.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks that required varying leadership and managerial skill sets.
    • Strong analytical and trend analysis skills.
    • Exceptional communication skills, effective in all directions of the organization.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies and implementation of continuous improvement practices.
    • Strong Excel skills with the ability to turn large amounts of data into effective decision making tools.
    • Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) from four-year college or university highly preferred.
